June 12, 1987; Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Since the end of World War II, Germany had been a divided country, the West free and democratic, the East under authoritarian communist control. When President Reagan took office, he was committed not only to uniting that country, but to bringing down the entire “Evil Empire.” While the importance of Reagan’s role in successfully doing so is endlessly debated, it beyond dispute that he exerted some influence in bringing the Cold War to an end. There is no more memorable and symbolic moment of this influence then when Reagan stood at the Berlin wall, the most visible symbol of the “Iron Curtain,” and challenged Gorbachev to “tear down this wall!” For all of the journals this week, listen to/watch the video assigned. In your journal post, write what stands out in the speech to you and what resonates with you personally. And why?

What resonates the most from Ronald Regan's speech was when he say "although I cannot be with you i address my remarks to those just as surely as those standing here before me for I join you as I join your fellow country men in the west." explaining he can not be in East Berlin he sends the same remarks and hopes his words are heard by those he wishes to help and bring hope to.

What stuck out to me was they wasbhebtalked about Berlin and its people. He described it as a cultural city full of history and filled with determined citizens. If I were from Berlin at that moment I would have felt a great sense of pride.

What caught my attention about this speech was that he knew what to do. He was calm about his decisions, he knew what to do as if he was president before. He also asked the people for help, as they responded him. He is recognized for being the best president that has ever lived.

The part of Reagan's speech that struck me the hardest was the calmness and stillness of his strong voice in a time of uncertainty and conflict. He seemed to always know what to say and just how to sway the audience. He is truly a skilled spokesman and a master of the crowd.

The part of President Reagan's speech that stood out the most to me was the sympathy he had for the people, and the strict attitude towards the Russian government. When speaking to the citizens on the other side of the Berlin Wall, he spoke with sympathy and encouragement to the people, but when he addressed the government he firmly stated, "Tear down this wall."

What stood out to me in this speech was his maturity. Words made a smaller impact than the previous speeches. He was knowledgeable and seemed confident in his actions. This is something a leader must do to be successful in my opinion. He remained calm and collected,

What stood out to me was when he stated that love was what brought both sides of Berlin together. This stood out because before saying it, he was questioning why these people were brought together, then answering with examples that can relate to anyone. Not just the Berlin people.

President Reagan impressed me by speaking calming, staying on topic over a heated conflict. Reagan stood strong against the Russian government to make the wall come down while keeping a level head. He appealed to the audience by being kind and sympathizing with them attempting to assure them that the wall would be torn down.

Reagan commented on how even in the shadow and fear brought on by the Berlin wall, he could see the hope and resolve in the eyes of the citizens on both sides of the wall. He's looking towards the future where the wall no longer stands and the world itself no longer seems so divided and bathed in conflict.

What stood out to me was when Regan said that the United States represents freedom and has been prosperous in doing so unlike any nation throughout history. In the midst of the Cold War, Reagan's speech is both symbolic and compelling. His ability to not only unite the American people but the free nations around the world led to the the overall success of his speech, but more over contributed to bringing an end to the Cold War.

What stood out to me was the way he felt for the people of Berlin and Germany. And how he said that the United States are a symbol of hope and freedom for them and how he encouraged them to continue to the future. In a future where there was no wall that divided them. I find it interesting how the United States viewed the situation happening there and how Reagan not only tried to bring together the people of the United States but the people of German also.

Ronald Reagan was know as the great communicator. Out of all the presidents in the work he was able to speak for our country the best. If it was foreign policy or putting a end to the iron curtain,he could speak and be clear and he knew a little German in order to communicate better.

A part of the speech that speech that stood out for me was when he called for the Russian gen. Secretary, Gorbachev to tear down the wall. It was important because he really connected with the German people and by saying that they knew change was possible. It most likely motivated them to hope for that change.

What stood out the most to me was Reagan's striking confidence in what he says. He carries himself and speaks in a way that portrays not only knowledge on the subject, but his overwhelming authority on the subject. He also effectively pauses and then starts to speak again which makes the audience want more from him.
