Rules
General Rules and Guidelines:
1. Students SHALL challenge a person above them on the ladder they're in ONCE every three weeks.
2. Students SHALL accept and schedule a challenge within one week of being challenged.
3. Only the student in the #1 position can challenge Mr. Dickson.
4. A challenge scheduled with Mr. Dickson must be conducted in front of the class.
5. Students losing the challenge will move one position down on the ladder,. This shifts the ladder accordingly.
6. If the challenger wins the challenge, they SHALL take over the position of the student they defeated.
7. If the challenged student wins, they remain where they were on the ladder.
8. Students forfeiting a challenge will move to the bottom of the ladder and the challenger takes over their position.
9. All challenges will be adjudicated by Mr. Dickson. His decision is final.
10. All challenges against Mr. Dickson will be adjudicated by the class.
11. Students may move up the ladder if their results in an event are better than the student immediately above them.
12. Rule #11 applies even if one student is competing and another student is not.
13. Tournament changes to the ladder do not replace the three week challenge rule.
14. Academic ineligibility moves the student down three positions each week the student is ineligible.
15. Students ineligible MAY NOT challenge nor accept a challenge during periods of academic ineligibility.
16. Students failing to challenge another student within a 3 week time frame will move to the bottom of the ladder.
17. Being challenged by someone does not eliminate the 3 week requirement to challenge. See Rule #1.
18. Students may lose a ranking/rankings based upon performance at a tournament at Mr. Dickson's discretion.
19. Not calling or not showing up for a registered tournament will drop you to the bottom of the tower.
Event Guidelines for the Challenge:
1. Prepared speech challenges will be a 5 minute cutting of their overall prepared speech.
(Both speakers do not have to be present at the same time for prepared speech challenges)
2. Extemp challenges will consist of 30 minutes of prep and a 7 minute speech.
(Both speakers do not have to be present at the same time for prepared speech challenges)
3. Interp challenges will be a 5 minute cutting of their overall interp selection. (only POI, DI, HI, Prose, Poetry).
(Both speakers do not have to be present at the same time for prepared speech challenges)
(Duos are not allowed currently in the Interp challenge - only POI, Di, HI, Prose or Poetry)
4. CX Debate challenges will be condensed to a 40 minute debate.
(Format 5-2-5-2-3-3-3-3 with 4 min prep) = 27 minutes + prep (Debate will start in the 2AC).
(All participants of the challenge SHALL be present when challenge takes place)
5. LD Debate challenges will be condensed to a 22 minute debate.
(Format 4-2-5-2-3-4-2 with 3 min prep) = 22 minutes + prep
(All participants of the challenge SHALL be present when challenge takes place)
6. Challenges may only be conducted during the following times of the 2019-2020 season.
(Anytime M-Th: 7:15 AM -9:25 AM; 11:04 AM - 5:30 PM; excluding times of scheduled midweek tournaments)
(Anytime F: 7:55 AM - 9:25 AM; 11:04 AM - 4:00 PM; excluding times of a scheduled pep rally)

1. This Power Tower is meant to be a fun & creative way to practice and prepare each students for their events.
2. This Power Tower replaces required weekly mandated practice times for team members.
3. Team members will still have required / mandated group practice times as needed for specific events.
4. Team members should still request individual practice times with Mr. Dickson as needed.
5. Mr. Dickson reserves the right to clarify / modify the rules and guidelines at any time.
6. Mr. Dickson and/or school administration reserves the right to cancel the Power Tower at any time.
